Your Procedure Day
From check-in to recovery, our team is here to help you feel comfortable, informed, and cared for throughout your visit. Your appointment will typically take a few hours from arrival to departure. Here’s what you can expect on the day of your procedure.
Video: Watch our procedure-day overview above to learn what to expect during your visit.
Arrival & Check In
Enter through the main lobby. Our entrance is past the elevators on the right. Once you arrive, our front desk team will check you in and guide you through the next steps. Please try to arrive 1.5 hours before your procedure or time given by ethe Endoscopy Center staff (subject to change).
Get Comfortable With Pre-Op
Your nurse will help you settle into a private pre-operative area, review your medical history, and ask a few questions to prepare for your procedure. A small IV will be placed in your arm to administer medications and fluids as needed.
Meet Your Care Team
Your care team will review your procedure and answer any questions you may have. Medication to help you relax and stay comfortable will be administered through your IV by your nurse or an anesthesia provider, as appropriate. Your breathing and vital signs will be monitored throughout the procedure.
Your Procedure
When it’s time, your nurse will accompany you to the procedure room. Our team will monitor you and help ensure your comfort throughout the exam. Many patients find that the procedure feels much quicker than expected, and you may have little memory of it afterward due to the sedation.
Recovery & Rest
After your procedure, you’ll be taken to the recovery area, where our team will monitor you as you wake up.
Depending on your procedure, you may experience a mild scratchy throat after an upper endoscopy or temporary bloating from the air used during a colonoscopy. These symptoms are generally mild. Let your nurse know if you experience significant discomfort or have any concerns.
Heading Home
Before you leave, your care team will review your discharge instructions, including guidance on eating, drinking, medications, and recovery. We’ll also explain how and when you’ll receive your results.
You’ll need someone to drive you home after receiving sedation. Once home, plan to rest and follow your discharge instructions. Many patients resume their usual activities the following day, depending on their procedure and how they feel.
Please Note: You cannot drive yourself home after receiving sedation. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and follow your care team’s instructions regarding supervision and activity after your procedure.
